There was also a puff piece about Toronto’s new Socialist mayor, Olivia Chow, in hopes she’ll follow her campaign platform and “build a Toronto that’s caring, affordable and safe.” An equally positive piece on June 26 looked at Canada’s “widely praised” national day care plan that reduces daily fees to $10 CAD, or roughly $7.60 USD. The Times ran a positive piece on June 23 about Canada’s Online News Act requiring tech companies like Google and Facebook to pay domestic publications for the right to link to their pieces. They’ve also been on a tear as of late to make America more like Canada. Meanwhile, the Decemissue of the New York Times Magazine declared it was “Trudeau’s Canada, Again.” The US liberal publication of record has barely said a cross word about him since he took office.

The author of an ApVanity Fair piece was mesmerised by the PM’s “functional knowledge of how computers work” and asked, “Is America completely sure that we can’t elect this guy, too?” A July 2017 Rolling Stone article included this header about Trudeau, “Is he the free world’s best hope?” Trudeau appeared on the December 2015 cover of Vogue as the “new young face of Canadian politics”. They viewed him as a modern liberal successor to then-US President Barack Obama and wanted to see him succeed. US Democrats and the progressive jet set swooned. This sentiment escalated when Liberal Prime Minister Justin Trudeau was elected in 2015. So much so, that many American liberals want to emulate their northern neighbours. There’s also that little war in 1812 that some prefer not to talk about.īy and large, it’s been a good and healthy relationship. Contentious matters related to trade policy, the auto industry and the environment, for instance. There have obviously been moments of disagreement. Canada and the US are close friends, allies and trading partners. Yet, every so often, some Americans look fondly to other nations for inspiration. It championed important principles like capitalism, freedom and individual rights and liberties. It was founded on the Enlightenment principles of constitutionalism and liberal democracy. The American colonies fought a revolutionary war to gain its independence from the British Crown. The United States is one of the world’s great democracies.
